Sharing the Road with Giants: A Smart Driver’s Guide to Truck Safety

Driving alongside large trucks can feel intimidating. If you’ve never driven a truck, it’s hard to appreciate just how differently they handle. Trucks are much heavier and larger than passenger vehicles, have significant blind spots, and need more space to turn, merge, or stop.

As freight brokers, part of our job at First Star Logistics is ensuring the safety and success of our carriers. Sharing the road responsibly is crucial to making sure truckers and other drivers reach their destinations safely. Here are essential tips for staying safe around trucks on the road.

1. Avoid Blind Spots

Large trucks and buses have substantial blind spots on all sides: the front, back, and sides. If you can’t see the driver in the truck’s side mirror, assume the driver can’t see you either.

  • Avoid lingering in these blind spots. Either slow down or move ahead to remain visible.
  • Be especially cautious when merging. Your car is more likely to be in a blind spot during a merge, increasing the chances of an accident.

By giving trucks the visibility they need, you’re helping everyone on the road stay safer.

2. Give Extra Space

Maintaining proper distance from a truck is always a good idea, regardless of conditions. Cutting off a truck or following too closely is not only unsafe but can have devastating consequences.

  • Avoid cutting in close: Trucks require significantly more time and distance to stop. Moving quickly in front of a truck could leave the driver unable to slow down in time.
  • Don’t tailgate: Following too closely puts your car in the truck’s rear blind spot. Worse, in a sudden stop, your car could slide under the truck, leading to severe damage or injuries.
  • Stay safe when stopped: On an incline, trucks may roll back slightly before moving forward. Always leave extra room when stopping behind a truck.

Extra space is your best defense against accidents and ensures trucks have room to maneuver safely.

3. When Passing a Large Truck, You Should…

Passing a truck requires care and consideration. Follow these simple rules:

  • Pass on the left: Visibility is better on the left side of the truck.
  • Use your signal: Always indicate your intentions clearly.
  • Provide plenty of space: After passing, don’t merge back into the lane too quickly. Ensure you can see the entire truck in your rearview mirror before moving over.

4. If a Truck is in the Left Lane…

While trucks typically stay in the right lane on highways, there are times when they use the left lane to pass slower vehicles. If you encounter a truck in the left lane:

  • Don’t rush past on the right: This maneuver is risky and often places you in a blind spot.
  • Be patient: Wait for the truck to complete its pass. Once it moves back to the right lane, you can safely proceed.

5. When You See Hazards…

If a truck has its hazard lights on, it’s essential to react responsibly.

  • Slow down: Trucks with hazards may be experiencing mechanical issues or need more space to maneuver.
  • Move over: If safe, shift to a different lane to give the truck extra room.

Hazard lights signal that the driver may need additional caution from others on the road.

6. If There is an Accident…

Accidents involving trucks can be particularly dangerous. If you’re involved in one or come upon a scene:

  • Prioritize safety: Move to a safe location away from traffic if possible.
  • Use emergency signals: Turn on your hazard lights or place warning triangles to alert other drivers.
  • Contact authorities: Call 911 immediately for assistance.

Avoid stopping directly behind or beside a truck, as this can create additional hazards.

7. Be Patient

Truck drivers face operational restrictions, like speed limiters and long braking distances. Aggressive behaviors like honking, weaving through traffic, or tailgating create unnecessary risks for everyone.

Patience is a simple but effective way to promote safer roads. Remember, trucks are vital to our supply chain, and sharing the road respectfully helps everyone reach their destinations safely.
